Our once proud mining community apparently holds insignificant regional interest competing between surrounding towns. Many do present greater historic influence, some can officially boast claims using expensively equiped computer departments. Widest recognition for Huthwaite may be its exposed location upon this counties highest natural terrain. But folk live here and through home or work they do influence ongoing regeneration, similar when ancestral roots first built Hucknall-under-Huthwaite.
As author and producer of Huthwaite Online my personal quest for collating our village history began by listening to residents of senior years. Being born and raised myself in this small village, along with most immediate family members I had begun witnessing some major changes before new millennium years dawned. Recollections added upon by elders gave fascinating insight into past lifestyles and many lost scenes. Sharing a new enthusiasm my research began by reading the few books by local historians. Their remarkable works offered evidence relating our historic growth, although primarily seen from its ruling towns. Piecing together this scattered information, my computer skills gained a use.
If I have seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of giants.
I have stood above and viewed around some changing scenes and times,
witnessed below our Strawberry Bank since before the loss of mines.
I've been raised among more senior folk heard tales of their past sights,
formed images to views now lost from these local lofty heights.
Early village growth recorded depicts times before we knew,
I'm fed from local historians whose work researched it through.
With reference to their previous toil I climb higher in my quest,
to provide a local resource only time will really test.
This secondary township held few details of how it emerged called Hucknall. Gathering scattered bits of historic data did slowly begin piecing together, only to find many long echoed beliefs confused issues often conflicting with updated understandings. Confidently skilled with technology and logical reasoning, organising latest knowledge gradually created initial pages covering recorded progressions. Historically establishing the influence of church and chapels sited between public houses helped clear some opaque understandings leading led me onto setting some further personal life time challenges.
Giving Huthwaite global presence upon an expanding internet stretched existing computer talents. Totally revising our history did however reach greater community interest. Viewing a growing collection of past images gave the visual stimulation for expressing artist desires and finding new motivation to achieve something of some future benefit for others, my research deepened. Focusing attention backwards then faced years beyond most peoples actual knowledge. And now relevance appears when better quoting Oscar Wilde in 1895 ... The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple.
