EXTRACTS FROM COMMITTEE MINUTES

Below are extracts from the minutes of the Committee of the Sutton Urban Council presented for approval at the monthly meeting of the Council on Monday.
Gas Committee:- The Chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee reported that he had met the men engaged in the Gas and Water Departments and that squads had been formed for the repairing and breakages in the gas and water mains due to enemy action.

Traffic Census.

Roads and Buildings Committee.- It was resolved that the Sub-Committee inspect the district regarding the white traffic lines.
Health Committee.- The analyst's report on two samples of water taken from (a) the Meden Valley supply, and (b) tap water taken from the Council's own supply, was submitted, from which it appears that both samples were satisfactory.

Bank Holiday Employment

A letter was read from the National Union of General and Municipal Workers stating that a number of men employed by the Council worked on August Bank Holiday, and that in accordance with the recent decision of the Non-Trading Services J.I.C., the men were entitled to double pay and a day off in lieu.
It was resolved that the Council abide by the decision of the J.I.C., but that the Clerk be instructed to write protesting against the granting of the additional day's holiday.
The Clerk reported that he had received the report, estimate and plans in connection with the improvement of the Huthwaite Sewage Disposal Works from Messrs. J.D. and D.M. Watson, for submission to the Ministry of Health. The report was referred to the Sub-Committee, in conjunction with the appropriate officials.
The Surveyor was requested to expedite the preparation of the particulars for submission to the Ministry of Health in connection with the Councils application for a loan for new public conveniences in the district.

Births and Deaths.

General Purposes Committee.- A letter was read from the Huthwaite Council of Social Service asking the Council's permission and help in making an alteration to the entrance of the premises used by them at the rear of Huthwaite Public Library...


NOTTS. INSURANCE COMMITTEE

At a meeting of the Notts. Insurance Committee in Nottingham on Monday, Mr. W.A. Staton presiding said it was reported that seven more county doctors were to be called up for service shortly. Already 37 doctors from Nottingham and Notts. have joined the Forces since the war began.
It was also reported that already more than 10,000 notifications of enlistments had been received in the county area.
the number of insured persons in the area on 1st July, 1940 was 207,890.


HUTHWAITE

At the meeting of the Sherwood Street Methodist Church Christian Endeavour Society on Monday, the speaker was Mrs. L. Hill, of Huthwaite, who gave an excellent address on "The Humanity of Christ."


The Evening Institute has re-opened and is going well, the numbers being an increase on last years total. Mr. Milnes is in charge of the tailoring in place of Miss Buxton, and it is hoped to start a class in home nursing.


As part of the annual Women's Own effort at the Sherwood Street Methodist Church, a "Bring and Buy" sale was held on Wednesday. A large number of gifts was brought, and received by Mesdames Clifton and Bradley. The goods weer sold at satisfactory prices, and the proceeds added to the Women's Own funds. The secretarial duties were carried out by Mrs. Bowmar.


The flag day on Saturday at Huthwaite for the Spitfire Fund, was organised by Mr. William Clarke and Mrs. Gaston, and the sum of £20 was obtained.


To help make up the sum needed for the Diocesan Quota, Mrs. J. Ensor held a whist drive at "The Sycamores" on Wednesday evening. Mr. M. Rockley (Churchwarden) acted as M.C. for 34 players... Refreshments were served by Miss Mary Ensor, Miss Margaret Lager (Mansfield), Misses Kathleen and Dorothy Wood, and Miss G. Buttery. Seating accommodation was loaned by Mr. G.E. Wilson, and the effort caused the Diocesan debit to be diminished by £2 4s. 3d.


Mr. Arthur Wood, aged 66, of Pole Cottages, Little Lane, has passed away after a lingering illness. He was interred at the Huthwaite Cemetery, the Rev.W.L. Boulton officiating members of the family and friends following him to his last resting place. Floral tributes were sent by:- Wife; Joe, Polly and Family; George and Arthur, Bob and Joan; Son Jack and Daughter Harriett; Daughter Cis. and Son Ern; Ellis Sarah and Family; Ada and Family; Cissie, Jack, Derrick and Howard; Joyce, Muriel and Norman, and Baby Dennis; Niece Ellen; Aunt Ellen; Mr. and Mrs. E. Hardy, Mrs. H. Wood and Family; Shoulder of Mutton Death and Dividing Club and Workpeople's Death and Dividing Club.


Mr. A. C. Smith presided over a meeting of the Comforts Fund Committee held at he old Council Offices on Wednesday evening. The Secretary (Mr. L. Heath) reported that over 200 parcels had been sent this week to men from Huthwaite on active service, and the contents comprised the following articles:- Writing pad and envelopes, pencil, tin and boot-polish, razor-blades, tooth-paste, 25 cigarettes, and a woolen article. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to the local W.V.S. for their generous help towards the provision of the woolen goods. A financial statement was submitted, showing receipts from efforts and donations of £156 6s. 4.5d., during the past 12 months, and thanks were extended to all who have contributed to the funds. It was proposed to hold the annual meeting early in November, and invite the public to attend.


At the Sherwood Street Methodist Church on Saturday, the first of a series of social evening was organised by the Temperance and Social Welfare Committee, the members of which are Misses H. Hawley and G. Purseglove and Messrs. J. Davies, N. Evans, A. Hawley, E. Lincoln, R. Purseglove and A. Thompson. Mr. J. Davies presided and the programme drawn up by Mr. N. Evans included pianoforte duets by Miss H. Hawley and Mr. N. Evans, violin solos by Mr. A. Thompson, songs by Mr. Cope,..


HUTHWAITE

On Sunday the harvest festival was held at the Parish Church, and although the week-night service was dispensed with the event was of a successful nature.


On Thursday afternoon the Women's Section of the Social Service Centre held their second effort for the local Spitfire Fund, when a party of visitors was entertained from the Warsop Social Service Centre (Women's Section)....


The annual Overseas Missionary meeting was held on Monday evening at the Sutton Road Methodist Church. The reports presented were of a very satisfactory nature, and the subscriptions were well maintained. The Rev. J.L. Robinson , of Brunswick, Sheffield, gave an address ...
