Villager Portrait Album Research

Trev Ashmore holds a keen interest collecting old local photographs, especially uncovering past Huthwaite residents. Shown here is some of his work in progress with personal research aimed at tracing villagers family roots and sharing genealogical knowledge with descendants featured through Huthwaite Online.

Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson and wife Ann (nee Burton). A farmer of Huthwaite Farm. Tom was born c1819 in Somercotes. Ann Burton born c1822, Huthwaite.

We believe their addressing refers to old Quaker lands stood off Blackwell Road, topside entry for Little Lane now siting Whitegates housing estate.

One daughter named Mary marriedGrandson Georgie George Ward-Ball. They were listed in 1881 keeping the Robin Hood public house at Old Blackwell. Their small son Georgie, a grandson of Tom, was unfortunately lost by drowning there in 1889, just four months prior the death of George senior same year.

Another daughter named Lucy wed a John Ward-Ball in 1888, the two brothers apparently originating from Blackwell. Lucy and John were listed 1891 as keeping The White Hart public house in Huthwaite.

Mrs Mary Burton Chambers

Mrs Mary Burton Chambers

Identified by name on this postcard, taken c1870 by a travelling photographer. Little else yet found about Mrs Mary Burton Chambers whom, if not a Huthwaite resident, is believed at least once living around this locality.

Lance Corporal Who?

North Staffs Lance Corporal

Trevs hoping someone can confirm identity of this handsome couple, taken at Ashays Studio, Outram Street, Sutton. His cap badged uniform shows a Lance Corporal in the North Staffs Regiment, and with some resemblance may be Ernest Bower, who wed Lilian Oldham in 1916.
